How to Filter Range-Bound Markets with the MT4 ADX Trend Filter

Camovia Tray Team · 2026-09-11

There’s a moment every trader knows too well: you spot what looks like the perfect breakout, enter the trade with confidence, and then the market does nothing. It drifts sideways, chops back and forth, stops you out, and then—just as you’re gone—it finally moves. The problem wasn’t your entry. It was reading the market environment.

This is exactly where the Average Directional Index (ADX), combined with a trend filter, becomes essential. The ADX doesn’t tell you which way the market is moving, but it does tell you if it’s moving with strength. When the ADX reading is above 25, the market is generally considered to be in a strong, trending phase. When it drops below 20–22, the market is likely range-bound—choppy, directionless, and dangerous for trend-following strategies.

The key is to use this information with a reliable filter. Simply adding the ADX to your MT4 chart and glancing at it isn’t enough. You can design a simple filter: treat readings above 25–28 as a trend environment, and readings below 20–22 as a range environment. A more advanced approach uses hysteresis—separate thresholds for entering and exiting a trend mode to avoid constant flipping between signals—along with the directional indicators (+DI and -DI) to confirm which side has momentum.

But to manage this effectively—especially if you’re running an automated strategy (EA) or monitoring several charts—you need to keep an eye on these ADX levels consistently. That’s when a tool like Camovia Tray becomes helpful. With it, you can check live ADX readings across your MT4 positions right from the system tray, without having to restore the platform window every time. This makes it easier to monitor whether the market is trending or ranging—so you can adjust your tactics accordingly. It keeps your workflow smooth, and keeps your data on your computer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need MT5/MT4 installed? Does the terminal need to stay open?

Yes. Camovia Tray reads quote and position data from your locally running MT5/MT4 terminal, so the terminal must be installed, running, and logged in. MT5 connects directly with no EA; MT4 needs the bundled bridge EA attached once (one-click copy in Settings, then double-click in the Navigator - see the docs).

Are my quotes and positions uploaded anywhere?

No. Quote and position data is read 100% from your local MT5/MT4 terminal and never leaves your computer. See the privacy policy for details.

Which systems and terminals are supported?

Windows 10 / 11, with MetaTrader 5 or MetaTrader 4 (installed and logged in; MT4 needs the bridge EA attached once).

Is the MT4 bridge EA safe? What do I need to enable?

Yes. The bridge EA (CamoviaBridge) is bundled with the app - it only reads quotes/positions locally and executes close commands; no DLLs, no data uploads. Closing positions requires turning on AutoTrading in the MT4 toolbar.
