Profit Calculator
No pip conventions, no guessing — enter the current price and your target, and see exactly what the trade makes or loses.
What it is
The easiest trap in estimating a trade's P/L is the "pip": brokers quote symbols with different decimal places, so what "1 pip" means differs — for gold, one broker's pip is 0.01 and another's is 0.001, and a wrong convention skews the result by 10x. This calculator sidesteps the whole issue by working with prices only: the current price on your screen and your target price (take-profit or stop-loss). Their difference is the real price move; multiply by the contract size and lots, and you get the actual money made or lost. Prices leave no room for interpretation.

Will this trade make or lose money?
Enter the current price and your target — the P/L appears instantly, computed in your browser.
Contract sizes and quote currencies are typical defaults and editable. Most reliable: in MT5, right-click the symbol → Specification, then enter the exact values.

How to use it
- Pick a symbol: presets come with typical contract sizes and quote currencies, or choose "Custom" to enter your own;
- Pick the direction: Buy/long (profits when the target is above the entry) or Sell/short (profits when below);
- Enter two prices: the entry (current) price and the target — a take-profit gives the potential profit, a stop-loss the potential loss;
- Enter the lot size for the trade;
- Pick the account currency: when the quote currency differs, enter a current exchange rate as prompted.
The formula
The P/L of the whole trade is the price difference times the contract size and lots, converted by the rate when needed.
Direction: +1 for buy/long, −1 for sell/short. The exchange rate is entered as "1 account currency = ? quote currency" (e.g. with a USD account and USDJPY, enter 153.62). A positive result is profit; a negative result is loss.
Worked example
A USD account trading gold (contract size 100 oz per lot), as an example:
- Buy 1 lot, entry 2650.10, take-profit 2660.10 → difference = +10.00;
- P/L per lot = 1 × 10.00 × 100 = +1,000 USD;
- Swap the target for a stop-loss at 2645.10 → difference = −5.00, or −500 USD per lot.
A 10-dollar move in gold makes 1,000 USD per lot; a 5-dollar move against you costs 500 USD — price to price, no conventions involved.
FAQ
Q Why not calculate P/L with pips?
Because brokers quote with different decimal places: for gold, one broker quotes 2 decimals (1 pip = 0.01) and another 3 decimals (1 pip = 0.001) — the same "100 pips" can mean price moves differing by 10x. Entering the entry and target prices removes the ambiguity entirely: a price difference is a price difference, no convention required.
Q Can the target price be my stop-loss?
Yes — that is one of the main uses. A take-profit target shows the potential profit; a stop-loss target shows the potential loss. Run both once and you can see the reward-to-risk of the trade. Losses show as negative values in red.
Q Where do I find the contract size?
In MT5: right-click the symbol in Market Watch → Specification → Contract Size. Typical values: forex 100,000 (one standard lot = 100k base currency), gold 100 (ounces), silver 5,000 (ounces), oil 1,000 (barrels), major indices 1 (index unit). Presets ship with typical defaults and stay editable when they differ from your broker.
Q How does sell/short work?
Choose the Sell direction: the trade profits when the target price is below the entry. Mathematically the difference is negated — a short from 2650.10 targeting 2640.10 gives a difference of −10.00 × direction −1 = +1,000 USD per lot (at 100 oz/lot), the same as a 10-dollar long move.
Q How do I fill the exchange rate?
The P/L is computed in the quote currency first, then converted to your account currency. Enter the rate as "1 account currency = ? quote currency" — for a USD account trading USDJPY, enter the current USDJPY price (e.g. 153.62). The tool never fetches prices online, so results are always based on the rate you enter.
