Swap Calculator
How much overnight fee does your trade burn each day? Know the cost before you hold.
What it is
Swap (also called overnight fee or rollover) is the fee charged or credited when a position is held overnight: you are borrowing one currency and lending another, and the interest differential plus the broker's markup can be positive or negative. For swing trades and positions held over the weekend, swap is a real cost that can quietly eat several days of profit. This calculator scales "per lot per night" into the total cost across your holding period, so you know whether holding overnight is worth it before you enter.

What does holding overnight cost?
Enter lots, nights and the per-lot nightly swap — the cost appears instantly, computed in your browser.
Contract sizes and quote currencies are typical defaults and editable. The most direct swap source: hold a small position overnight and read the nightly amount, or convert from the MT5 symbol specification Swap value.

How to use it
- Pick the symbol and direction: swap for long and short usually differ (often one is positive and the other negative);
- Enter lots and holding days: how many lots, and how many nights you plan to hold (weekends usually count as 3 nights, per your broker's rule);
- Enter the per-lot nightly swap: check your platform — open positions show the nightly amount directly, or convert from the MT5 symbol specification Swap value;
- Pick the account currency: when the quote currency differs, enter a current exchange rate as prompted;
- Read the result: nightly cost and total cost — negative means you pay, positive means you receive.
The formula
Swap accumulates linearly per lot per night, converted by the rate when needed.
A positive per-lot nightly swap means you receive interest; negative means you pay — most symbols are negative on at least one side. The exchange rate is entered as "1 account currency = ? quote currency". Positions held overnight on Wednesday usually carry triple swap, per your broker's rule.
Worked example
A USD account holding 1 lot of gold with a swap of −5.20 USD per lot per night, as an example:
- Nightly cost = 1 × (−5.20) = −5.20 USD;
- One night → pay 5.20 USD; five nights → −5.20 × 5 = −26.00 USD;
- Two lots for ten nights → −5.20 × 2 × 10 = −104.00 USD.
One gold lot costs 5.2 USD every night — 52 USD over ten nights. Price the swap into your cost before holding a swing trade, then judge whether the target is really worth it.
FAQ
Q Why can swap be positive or negative?
Swap comes from the interest differential between the two currencies (or between a commodity and a currency): you usually receive when you "lend" the higher-yielding side and pay when you "borrow" the lower-yielding one, plus the broker's markup. That is why long and short swap often have opposite signs, and the same direction can differ between brokers.
Q Where do I find my platform's swap?
Two places: ① the most direct — hold a small position overnight and read the nightly amount on the open position; ② the MT5 Market Watch → right-click the symbol → Specification → "Swap long / Swap short", which is usually in points and must be converted by point value before it is a money amount. This tool takes the per-lot nightly amount directly, which is the simplest path.
Q How does weekend swap work?
Forex and most CFDs do not settle on weekends, so brokers book three days of swap on positions held overnight on Wednesday (a Wednesday hold counts as 3 nights; some symbols like gold may use a different triple day). Follow your broker's rule — entering 3 days in the calculator simulates a weekend.
Q How do I fill the exchange rate?
Swap is computed in the quote currency first, then converted to your account currency. Enter the rate as "1 account currency = ? quote currency" — for a USD account trading USDJPY, enter the current USDJPY price (e.g. 153.62). The tool never fetches prices online, so results are always based on the rate you enter.
