MQL5 Close Position: 4 Ways to Close in MetaTrader 5

Camovia Tray Team · 2026-08-23

Gold spikes three dollars in a minute, and your finger is already hovering over the close button — but the MT5 window is buried under three others. Every fast session produces that moment: the exit decision is made, and the terminal itself becomes the obstacle. Closing a position in MQL5/MT5 is one keystroke away at best; at worst, it is the slowest link in the chain.

"Close position" sounds like a single action, but in MetaTrader 5 there are genuinely four different ways to do it, each with its own trade-off between speed, safety, and control. Here they are, from the most basic to the most automated.

1. Close Manually in the Trade Tab

This is the default MT5 workflow — no setup, nothing to install, and the controls are exactly where every trader already looks.

  1. Press Ctrl+T (or click Terminal) to open the terminal panel.
  2. Switch to the Trade tab.
  3. Find your position in the Positions section.
  4. Right-click it and choose Close Position, or double-click the row and close it from the order management dialog.

When this fits: you are already working inside MT5, you want to review the position details before acting, or you only have a few open positions.

The limitation: for years the native terminal had no "close all positions" button — traders petitioned for one on the official MQL5 forum — and while build 3260 finally added a Bulk Operations menu, it hides in the right-click menu with no shortcut, so day-to-day closing is still a position-by-position process. The whole flow also requires the MT5 window to be focused, which gets awkward the moment another application is covering it.

2. Use the One-Click Trading Panel

MT5 ships with a One-Click Trading mode designed for speed. Enable it in the terminal settings (Tools → Options → Trade), and a compact panel appears on the chart with live buy/sell prices and position controls.

Steps:

  1. Enable One-Click Trading in MT5 settings.
  2. Open the chart of the symbol you are trading.
  3. Use the chart panel to manage entries and exits directly.

When this fits: you are a short-term trader who lives on the charts and needs entries and exits in a single click without confirmation dialogs.

The trade-off: it removes the confirmation step, so a misclick goes straight to the market. It is also still part of the MT5 window — if the terminal is minimized or hidden behind other windows, you must bring it back first. And like the manual method, it is single-position, not bulk management.

3. Close a Position Programmatically with MQL5 Scripts or EAs

"Close position" is also an API. MQL5's standard library provides CTrade::PositionClose(), callable from any script or Expert Advisor:

CTrade trade;
if (trade.PositionClose(position_ticket))
    Print("Position closed");

The official CTrade::PositionClose() documentation covers parameters and return codes. With it you can build exactly the behavior the terminal lacks: close all positions of a symbol, close the oldest ticket first, auto-close when profit hits a threshold, or wire closing into a risk-management routine.

When this fits: you need automation, batch logic, or custom conditions — and you are comfortable writing or maintaining MQL5 code.

The trade-off: it is the highest-effort option. For a trader who only wants a faster manual exit, writing a script is more setup than the problem deserves, and any logic bug sits right in your trading path.

4. Close from the System Tray with Camovia Tray

Camovia Tray turns MT5 (and MT4) into a tray tool. The terminal itself stays wherever it is — usually hidden — and closing happens from the Windows system tray:

  1. Hover over the Camovia Tray icon to open the popup.
  2. Switch to the order page, which lists every open position as a card: symbol, direction, lots, open price, and current P&L at a glance.
  3. Click the card of the position you want to close.
  4. Click Close, then Confirm — a deliberate two-step confirmation.

For MT5, Camovia Tray reads data directly without an EA. For MT4, you attach the included bridge EA (CamoviaBridge) once — a one-time setup of about 30 seconds — and enable AutoTrading (Ctrl+E) before closing.

Quotes and positions are 100% read from the local terminal and stay on your computer; nothing is uploaded.

When this fits: you want to check prices and manage positions without opening the terminal, you hold several positions and want the whole P&L picture in one glance, or you care that trading data never leaves your machine.

The trade-off: the two-step confirmation adds one click compared to one-click trading — which is exactly the point, since it is the safeguard against accidental closes, and it is the only method here that works with the MT5 window fully hidden.

Which One Should You Use?

Low-frequency trading, new to MT5Close manually in the Trade tab
Chart-based scalping, maximum speedOne-Click Trading panel
Batch or automated closing logicMQL5 script / EA (PositionClose())
Quick tray-side management, privacy-firstCamovia Tray

The methods are not mutually exclusive. A common setup: use Camovia Tray for daily quote checks and quick exits from the tray, open the full terminal when you need to fine-tune orders, and leave automation to an EA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need MT5/MT4 installed? Does the terminal need to stay open?

Yes. Camovia Tray reads quote and position data from your locally running MT5/MT4 terminal, so the terminal must be installed, running, and logged in. MT5 connects directly with no EA; MT4 needs the bundled bridge EA attached once (one-click copy in Settings, then double-click in the Navigator - see the docs).

Are my quotes and positions uploaded anywhere?

No. Quote and position data is read 100% from your local MT5/MT4 terminal and never leaves your computer. See the privacy policy for details.

Which systems and terminals are supported?

Windows 10 / 11, with MetaTrader 5 or MetaTrader 4 (installed and logged in; MT4 needs the bridge EA attached once).

Is the MT4 bridge EA safe? What do I need to enable?

Yes. The bridge EA (CamoviaBridge) is bundled with the app - it only reads quotes/positions locally and executes close commands; no DLLs, no data uploads. Closing positions requires turning on AutoTrading in the MT4 toolbar.
