How to Install and Attach a Gold EA in MT5

Camovia Tray Team · 2026-10-11

You downloaded a gold EA. Maybe you bought it, maybe a friend sent it over, maybe you grabbed it from the MQL5 Market because the backtest looked incredible.

You followed what seemed like the right steps. Copied the file. Dragged it onto an XAUUSD chart. Waited.

Nothing.

No trades. No entry arrows. Just a gold chart sitting there, mocking you. You double-check the EA settings, everything looks fine. The smiley face is even there in the corner. But the EA is silent.

I have been in this exact spot. It is frustrating, and the fix is usually something small that nobody explains clearly the first time. So let me walk you through what is actually happening and how to get your gold EA running properly in MetaTrader 5.

The symptom: Your gold EA attaches but does not trade

You have completed the basic install. The EA shows up in your Navigator. You dragged it onto a gold chart. The confirmation dialog appeared, you clicked OK. Maybe you even saw the EA name in the top right corner of the chart.

But no trades appear in the Terminal tab. The Experts tab shows no activity, or only a quiet line of initialization text. The gold market moves, your EA sits still.

If this is you, the EA itself is probably fine. The problem is almost always permissions or attachment context.

Why this happens: MT5 separates “attached” from “allowed to trade”

MetaTrader 5 gives you two distinct layers of control, and both must be green for an EA to execute anything .

The first layer is the platform-level Algo Trading button. It sits in your main toolbar, and it must be active. When it is off, every single EA on every chart is blocked from trading, regardless of what you clicked in the EA settings . Think of it as the master switch for automated trading on the entire terminal.

The second layer lives inside the EA itself. When you attach an EA to a chart, a properties window appears. On the “Common” tab, there is a checkbox labeled “Allow Algo Trading” . If this box is unchecked, that specific EA is not allowed to execute trades, even if the platform-level button is on.

For gold EAs, there is often a third layer too: the attachment context. Many XAUUSD EAs are optimized for a specific chart symbol and timeframe. If you attach it to a chart that is not the gold symbol your broker actually uses, or to a timeframe the EA is not designed for, it may run without ever finding the conditions it needs .

The strategy: A clean gold EA setup in MT5

Here is the full sequence. Do it in order, and do not skip the verification steps.

Step 1: Install the gold EA file into the right folder

Your EA file ends in either .ex5 (compiled) or .mq5 (source). If it came from the MQL5 Market, you can install it directly from within MT5, which handles the file placement for you .

If you have a file on your computer, open MT5 and go to File → Open Data Folder. Navigate to MQL5 → Experts, and paste your EA file there . If the EA came with additional files like presets (.set) or libraries (.dll), place them in the corresponding Presets or Libraries folders inside MQL5 .

After copying, return to MT5, right-click in the Navigator window, and choose Refresh. Your EA should now appear under Expert Advisors .

Step 2: Open a proper XAUUSD chart

Press Ctrl+N if the Navigator is hidden. In the Market Watch window, find your broker’s gold symbol. It might be XAUUSD, XAUUSD.m, GOLD, or something with a suffix. Right-click it and choose Chart Window.

Do not assume the symbol name is always exactly “XAUUSD.” The EA needs to run on the chart your broker actually offers .

Step 3: Attach the EA to the gold chart

In the Navigator, expand Expert Advisors and find your installed gold EA. Drag it onto the open XAUUSD chart, or double-click it .

A properties window opens. This is where you configure the EA’s inputs, things like lot size, risk percentage, or trading hours. If the EA came with a .set preset file, load it from the Inputs tab.

Step 4: Enable algorithmic trading at both levels

In that same properties window, click the “Common” tab. Check “Allow Algo Trading” .

Click OK. Now look at the toolbar at the top of MT5. Find the “Algo Trading” button. It should be green. If it is red, click it once to turn it green .

Step 5: Confirm the EA is actually running

Look at the top right corner of your XAUUSD chart. You should see the EA name and, ideally, a smiley face icon. A frowning face or a stop sign means something is still off .

Now open the “Experts” tab at the bottom of the terminal. You should see initialization messages from your EA. Open the “Journal” tab too, just in case there are errors. If the EA uses WebRequest to pull news data or external information, you may need to allow specific URLs in Tools → Options → Expert Advisors .

A properly running gold EA will show its status on the chart, often through a small information panel, and will begin logging its logic in the Experts tab.

What about keeping an eye on your gold positions afterward?

Here is the practical reality of running a gold EA: you are not going to stare at the chart all day. Gold moves fast, and the whole point of automated trading is that you do not have to watch every tick.

But you still want to know what your EA is doing. Is it holding a buy from the London open? Has it taken profit on that short from earlier? Are you carrying too much exposure into the New York session?

This is where a tool like Camovia Tray fits into the picture naturally. It turns your MT5 terminal into a tray tool, so you can hover over the system tray icon and see your open positions at a glance [file content]. Symbol, direction, lot size, entry price, current P/L, all in a small popup.

For gold traders specifically, that means you can check your XAUUSD exposure without pulling up the full MetaTrader window. Click a position card, and you can close it if you decide the EA has done its job or you want to intervene before a news event.

The data stays on your machine. Camovia reads from your local MT5 terminal, so your positions and prices never leave your computer [file content]. It is a simple way to stay connected to what your gold EA is doing without committing to full screen time.

The gold EA handles the execution. You just need a quiet way to stay informed.

One last check before you walk away

Once your gold EA setup in MT5 is confirmed running, verify three things: the Algo Trading button is green, the “Allow Algo Trading” box is checked in the EA properties, and the EA is attached to the correct XAUUSD chart for your broker.

If those three are true, and your Experts tab shows clean initialization, you have done the hard part. The EA will do the rest.
