Error 133 in MetaTrader 4: Why "Trade Is Disabled" and How to Fix It

Camovia Tray Team · 2026-09-13

You've been watching your charts, waiting for the perfect setup. The price hits your entry level, you click "Buy" or trigger your Expert Advisor, and then—nothing. You check the Experts tab in the Terminal window, and there it is: "Error 133 - trade is disabled."

If you've been trading on MetaTrader 4 for a while, you've probably run into this at least once. It's one of the more frustrating errors because it stops you from opening, closing, or modifying orders, and the error message itself doesn't tell you exactly why.

The short version: Error 133 (ERR_TRADE_DISABLED) means your order was rejected, usually by your broker, a local terminal setting, or an account issue. But there are several possible reasons, and knowing which one applies to you is the key to fixing it fast.

1. Account-Related Issues

A surprisingly common cause of Error 133 is logging in with the wrong password. Your MT4 account has two passwords: a main password (full trading access) and an investor password (read-only access). If you log in with the investor password, you can see your balance and open positions, but you cannot place or modify orders.

Another possibility: your broker has placed your account in a "read-only" or "close-only" state. This can happen if they require additional verification, if you've violated their trading rules, or if your account has had prior margin issues. In some cases, a broker might also temporarily disable trading for a specific symbol—you may still see it in the Market Watch, but trying to open a new order will trigger Error 133 because the symbol is grayed out or set to "No" under the Trade parameter.

2. Local Terminal Settings

Sometimes the problem isn't with your broker but with your own MT4 settings. If you're running Expert Advisors, check Tools > Options > Expert Advisors and make sure "Allow automated trading" is checked. If this box isn't ticked, your EAs won't be able to send orders, and you'll get Error 133.

A quick way to toggle this is using the AutoTrading button on the main toolbar, or the shortcut Ctrl+E. [citation:product_knowledge] If the button is red, automated trading is disabled—click it to turn it green.

3. Terminal Context Issues

Error 133 can also appear when the terminal is busy processing another order. If your EA tries to send multiple orders simultaneously or if you click "Buy" repeatedly while the previous order is still being processed, the platform may reject the new request with Error 133. Allowing a few seconds for the previous action to complete, or restarting the platform, often resolves this.

4. Symbol-Specific Issues

If Error 133 only occurs on a specific symbol, the market might be closed. Check the symbol specifications in MT4 by right-clicking on the symbol in Market Watch and selecting Specification. Scroll to the bottom to see trading hours—if the market is closed, you'll need to wait until it reopens.

Additionally, some brokers retire old symbols and introduce new ones—the old symbol may remain in the list but only allow closing existing positions, not opening new ones. Attempting to open a new order on a disabled symbol will trigger Error 133.

A Common Experience, a Simple Solution

The first time you hit Error 133, it's easy to panic. But most cases are resolved quickly by checking one of these common culprits. Once you know what to look for, the fix usually takes less than a minute.

And if you're someone who manages multiple positions or wants to keep an eye on your account without leaving MT4 open all day, tools like Camovia Tray exist to streamline exactly that experience—letting you check live quotes and manage open positions directly from the system tray, with the option to hide the MT4 window completely. It doesn't fix Error 133, but it makes managing your trading routine a little smoother, especially if you're frequently toggling between your terminal and other applications.

In short: Error 133 means trading is disabled. Check your login credentials, terminal settings, symbol status, and whether the market is open. If none of these work, contact your broker—they'll be able to confirm whether your account has been restricted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Camovia Tray?

A Windows desktop app that turns MT5/MT4 into a tray tool: hover the system tray to check the latest quotes and manage open positions (click an order to close it), hide the MT5/MT4 main window in one click, and keep quote and position data entirely on your computer.

Do I need MT5/MT4 installed? Does the terminal need to stay open?

Yes. Camovia Tray reads quote and position data from your locally running MT5/MT4 terminal, so the terminal must be installed, running, and logged in. MT5 connects directly with no EA; MT4 needs the bundled bridge EA attached once (one-click copy in Settings, then double-click in the Navigator - see the docs).

Are my quotes and positions uploaded anywhere?

No. Quote and position data is read 100% from your local MT5/MT4 terminal and never leaves your computer. See the privacy policy for details.

Which systems and terminals are supported?

Windows 10 / 11, with MetaTrader 5 or MetaTrader 4 (installed and logged in; MT4 needs the bridge EA attached once).
