The Practical Reality of Hedging Accounts in MetaTrader 5

Camovia Tray Team · 2026-09-13

You're watching EUR/USD drift sideways, and your long position from 1.0850 is showing a small loss. Instead of closing it and accepting the red number, you open a short position at 1.0875. Now you have two positions on the same pair, moving in opposite directions. This is a hedge—and in MetaTrader 5, whether you can do this depends entirely on one setting you chose when you opened your account.

MT5 supports two position accounting systems: netting and hedging. With netting, the platform consolidates all positions on the same symbol into a single net position. Open a second trade on the same pair, and it adjusts the volume and average entry price of the existing one. With hedging, every new deal opens a separate position, each with its own stop loss, take profit, and entry price. If you've used MT4, hedging mode will feel familiar—MT4 functionally works the same way.

Setting Up a Hedging Account

The hedging option appears during account creation. When you open a new demo or live account in MT5, the account parameters screen includes a checkbox labeled "Use hedge in trading". Tick it, and you get a hedging account. Leave it unticked, and you get netting. Some brokers also allow you to switch an existing account from netting to hedging, but you'll need to close all open positions and pending orders first—the platform won't let you change modes with active trades on the book.

Not every broker offers both options. The choice is set at the server level, and many brokers now default to hedging mode because it matches how most forex and CFD traders actually work with MT5. If you're unsure what mode your account uses, the quickest check is practical: open two positions on the same symbol and look at the Trade tab. If you see two separate rows, you're in hedging mode. If you see one row with combined volume and averaged entry price, you're in netting.

Why Hedging Matters

Hedging isn't just about holding opposite positions. It changes how you manage your entire workflow. With hedging mode, you can scale into a position at multiple price levels, each with its own stop loss and take profit. You can run different Expert Advisors on the same symbol without them interfering with each other's positions. And when you want to close two opposing positions, MT5's Close By feature lets you offset them against each other without paying the spread on both closes.

But there's a catch. A hedging account means more positions to track, more line items in your trade history, and more mental overhead when you're watching the screen. The Trade tab fills up fast, and if you're running multiple strategies, it's easy to lose sight of your overall exposure. This is where the practical challenge of hedging accounts shows up: the same flexibility that makes hedging powerful also creates complexity.

Staying on Top of Multiple Positions

When you have six open positions across three pairs—some long, some short, at different entry prices—opening the full MT5 terminal every time you want a quick status check becomes a friction point. You might be in the middle of another task, working through a spreadsheet, or just want to glance at your open risk without switching context.

This is the gap that a tray-based tool can fill. With Camovia Tray, you can view your open positions directly from the system tray—symbol, direction, volume, entry price, and current profit/loss, all in one place. No need to restore the MT5 window, navigate to the Trade tab, and then hide it again. The positions stay visible as a compact floating window, and when you're done, it's gone with a click.

For hedging accounts specifically, the value multiplies. Because hedging accounts naturally generate more positions, having a fast, always-available way to review them matters more. You can check your exposure without interrupting your workflow, and if you need to close a position—fully or partially—the tray interface supports one-click closure with a two-step confirmation to prevent mistakes.

All of this runs locally. The data comes directly from your MT5 terminal and stays on your computer—it's not sent anywhere, uploaded, or stored externally. For traders managing multiple positions across a hedging account, that combination of speed and privacy makes a real difference.

Hedging accounts in MT5 give you flexibility. The challenge is managing what that flexibility creates: more positions, more data, more decisions. Tools that reduce the friction of checking and managing those positions—without adding new privacy risks—turn a flexible account structure into a practical, everyday advantage.

Where are the privacy policy and user agreement?

The "Privacy" and "EULA" links in the footer of this site, with GDPR/CCPA information included.

What is Camovia Tray?

A Windows desktop app that turns MT5/MT4 into a tray tool: hover the system tray to check the latest quotes and manage open positions (click an order to close it), hide the MT5/MT4 main window in one click, and keep quote and position data entirely on your computer.

Do I need MT5/MT4 installed? Does the terminal need to stay open?

Yes. Camovia Tray reads quote and position data from your locally running MT5/MT4 terminal, so the terminal must be installed, running, and logged in. MT5 connects directly with no EA; MT4 needs the bundled bridge EA attached once (one-click copy in Settings, then double-click in the Navigator - see the docs).
